Batu Caves-Named after river Sungai Batu (Stone River),one of the most visited Hindu temples outside India owing to its historical religious significance.These caves are located about 16 kms north of Kuala Lumpur and are formed from 400 million years old limestone.While entering these Caves you are welcomed by world’s tallest Statue of Lord Murugan (140 ft gold painted)-Lord Murugan or Kartikeya or Subrahmanya, philosopher-warrior god of Hinduism (the god of youth, power, and virtue).

Batu Caves Houses three main caves –Cathedral cave, Art Gallery Cave and Museum Cave.Cathedral cave –Largest and popular for Hindu temples having a ceiling of 100 meters.To reach this cave temple you have to climb 272 stairs and while climbing these stairs you will encounter many macaques.During my visit to this cave, as construction was going on inside the cave,every visitor was carrying bricks in their hands all the way to the temple to seek blessing in doing this good deed.

Every year Thaipusam,Hindu festival is celebrated at Batu Caves,which is attended by millions of devotees all over Asia.The festival begins with a procession at Sri MahamariammanTemple,Kuala Lumpur and arrives at Batu caves with many offerings to follow.Dark cave (100 million years old) is other cavern of Batu caves while lies on the left side while climbing stairs to the temple, famous for Trapdoor spider species (Liphistius batuensis –rarest spider in the world) and many other fauna like Cave cricket,Tailless whip scorpion, Cave racer,Psechrus Spider, Fruit bats.It is also one of the most researched tropical caves in the world.If you are interested to know more about Dark cave, you sign up for the Dark Cave Educational Tour.

The other famous attraction of Batu caves is Ramayana cave.At the entrance of this cave, you can see a huge statue of Hanuman (ardent devotee of Lord Rama).This Cave represents characters from Ramayana (story of Rama and Sita).

Rock Climbing

Batu caves are also famous for rock climbing and trekking adventures.Among 170 climbing routes, Nyamuk wall is the longest and best sport climbing route in Batu Caves.

Opening Time: 7.00 am – 8.00 pm (daily).

Entry is free for all.Dress code no short pants and short skirts allowed.

Getting TO Batu Caves

 Taxi – Easily accessible by hiring a taxi, fares (for a budget taxi) ranges from RM20 to RM35 depending on traffic condition.

KTM Train Komuter – from Kuala Lumpur Sentral Station to the Batu Caves. Ticket fare RM2.00 for single journey & RM4.00 for the return journey.
